Self-interference of a single Bose-Einstein condensate due to boundary effects

چکیده
Abstract A simple model wavefunction, consisting of a linear combination of two free-particle Gaussians, describes many of the observed features seen in the interactions of two isolated Bose-Einstein condensates as they expand, overlap, and interfere. We show that a simple extension of this idea can be used to predict the qualitative time-development of a single expanding BEC condensate produced near an infinite wall boundary, giving similar interference phenomena. We also briefly discuss other possible time-dependent behaviors of single BEC condensates in restricted geometries, such as wave packet revivals.

Solitons for nearly integrable bright spinor Bose-Einstein condensate
Using the explicit forms of eigenstates for linearized operator related to a matrix version of Nonlinear Schrödinger equation, soliton perturbation theory is developed for the $F=1$ bright spinor Bose-Einstein condensates. A small disturbance of the integrability condition can be considered as a small correction to the integrable equation. By choosing appropriate perturbation, the soli...
متن کاملCasimir forces in Bose-Einstein condensates: finite size effects in three-dimensional rectangular cavities
The Casimir force due to thermal fluctuations (or pseudo-Casimir force) was recently calculated for the perfect Bose gas in the slab geometry for various boundary conditions. The Casimir pressure due to quantum fluctuations in a weakly-interacting dilute Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) confined to a parallel plate geometry was also recently calculated for Dirichlet boundary conditions. In this p...
متن کاملNumber Fluctuations and Phase Diffusion in a Bose-Einstein Condensate of Light
Bose-Einstein condensates of quasiparticles such as exciton-polaritons, magnons and massive photons allow for new experimental possibilities as compared to the atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. In this Thesis we focus on a condensate of photons, first created at Bonn University in 2010. One of the recent achievements is the measurement of number fluctuations in such a condensate of photons. We ...
متن کاملBose-Einstein Condensates in Optical Lattices: Spontaneous Emission in the Presence of Photonic Band Gaps
An extended Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in an optical lattice provides a kind of periodic dielectric and causes band gaps to occur in the spectrum of light propagating through it. We examine the question whether these band gaps can modify the spontaneous emission rate of atoms excited from the BEC, and whether they can lead to a self-stabilization of the BEC against spontaneous emission. We ...
متن کاملObservation of vortex phase singularities in Bose-Einstein condensates.
We have observed phase singularities due to vortex excitation in Bose-Einstein condensates. Vortices were created by moving a laser beam through a condensate. They were observed as dislocations in the interference fringes formed by the stirred condensate and a second unperturbed condensate. The velocity dependence for vortex excitation and the time scale for re-establishing a uniform phase acro...
